Overview
This script removes locally stored Outlook data from your computer, including web storage, cached settings, and downloaded attachments.
Outlook stores user settings both in the cloud and locally on your computer 1. While many settings automatically sync to Microsoft's servers, some computer-specific or Office-wide settings remain local, such as those related to Windows, local files, or the Ribbon 1.
This script improves privacy by removing locally cached settings that may contain personal communications and user preferences. The stored data may include sensitive information such as email content, contact details, calendar entries, and personal files from attachments. This local data may persist even after you've deleted emails from the server. This creates potential privacy risks if your device is accessed by others, shared, stolen, or compromised by malware. Additionally, these local caches may retain metadata about your communication patterns and contacts.
It improves security by deleting attachment folders that may be infected by malware 2 3.
It improves system performance by clearing accumulated cached data that takes up disk space.
However, it will lead to increased application launch time and require repeated sign-ins when you next use Outlook 4.
After running this script, you will need to re-download attachments and some personalized Outlook settings will be reset to defaults.
Technical Details
This script clears the following user data locations:
- New Outlook:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Olk\EBWebView\Default\IndexedDB
2 4: IndexedDB is a storage system used to store structured data locally on your computer 5. This enables Outlook to search through and access email data quickly, even when offline.%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Olk\EBWebView\Default\Local Storage
4: Local Storage is used to store data with no expiration date 6. This includes various preferences and cached information that persists between Outlook sessions.%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Olk\Attachments
4 7: This is where Outlook downloads and stores email attachments on your computer 7. Email attachments can contain malicious code and may become infected with malware, potentially leading to system compromise, data theft, or malware propagation 3.
- Classic Outlook:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\Offline Address Books
8%USERPROFILE%\Documents\Outlook Files
9 10: Personal Folders (.pst) for new profiles 9 10. PST files contain emails, contacts, calendar items, and other Outlook data for POP3 accounts 9.%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\*.pst
: Personal Folders (.pst) for legacy profiles and SharePoint lists 9 10. They include information about sent and received e-mails 11%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\*.ost
9 10: Offline Folders file (.ost) 9. Offline and Cached mode folders used by Exchange server and the Outlook connector 10. These include e-mail data 11%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\RoamCache
8 9 12: AutoComplete entries 9 12.%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\OutlPrnt
9 10: Customized print settings 9 10.%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\VbaProject.otm
9: Macros and VBA programs 9 10.%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\*.xml
9 10: Navigation bar customizations 9 10.%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Outlook\*.srs
