Overview
This script disables the "Try the new Outlook" toggle that appears in the classic Outlook application.
The "Try the new Outlook" toggle appears in the upper right corner of the classic Outlook application 1. Clicking this toggle replaces the traditional Outlook application with the new web-based Outlook 1. The new Outlook is built on Outlook.com 1 and depends on the Microsoft Edge web browser 1 2.
By default, the "Try the new Outlook" toggle appears in all versions of classic Outlook 3 4 5. This script hides the toggle from appearing in classic Outlook for Windows 3 6.
This script enhances your privacy by preventing the switch to the new Outlook. The new Outlook specifically collects additional user data, including emails and passwords 2 7 8.
This script also improves system performance by avoiding the new Outlook version. The new Outlook is a resource-intensive web-based application that uses web technologies (JavaScript/HTML/CSS) 2. Classic Outlook is more optimized (a compiled 32/64-bit executable) 2.
This script only applies to classic Outlook desktop software (2016, 2019, 2021, and Outlook in Microsoft Office 365) 9. It does not work for Windows Mail 9.
You need to restart Outlook after applying this change for it to take effect 10 11.
There is a trade-off to consider: while the new Outlook has privacy concerns, older versions are not as supported. End-of-support for Classic Outlook is 2029 2 12, and for Windows Mail and Calendar it is 2024 2 13. Using older software may introduce security risks over time, but the new Outlook presents more immediate privacy concerns.
New Outlook threatens privacy now, while older versions (supported until 2024-2029) may pose security risks later.
Technical Details
This script sets registry values:
- For regular users:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options\General!HideNewOutlookToggle
1 2 3 4 5 6 9 10 11 - For Group Policy (GPO):
HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Options!HideNewOutlookToggle
2 3
Setting both values creates a dual-layer protection. Group Policy (GPO) is a Windows feature that enforces settings and prevents them from being changed through regular methods. This approach ensures the "Try the new Outlook" toggle remains hidden even if you or another program attempts to re-enable it, providing stronger privacy protection than using just one registry setting alone.
The value options are:
This script is only recommended if you understand its implications.
Some non-critical or features may no longer function correctly after running this script.
This script can be fully reversed to restore changes if something goes wrong.
